Table Runner Class w/ Emily - $50

Join us for an advanced beginner class to make a table runner just in time for the holidays; or make it bigger for a quilt!

This class is for quilters of all skill levels! We will be using 60-degree triangles to create hexagonal “blocks.”  Hexagons are a great way for experienced quilters to break out of the square quilt block, but this design is still easily accessible for a beginner.

Finished Sizes - your choice:

  • 22.25” x35” – long table runner
  • 30” diameter – round table runner
  • 44” x 60” – quilt

Students should be familiar with the operation of their sewing machine.

Some work will need to be done outside of class, but we will go over the steps and have time to work and ensure everyone is comfortable with what needs to be done.

Materials:

First, a couple of notes on strips!
The strips for this pattern should all be at least 42” long (width of fabric) but can be cut any thickness from 1” to 4.5”.  They do not have to all be the same thickness.   Pre-cutting your fabric into strips will mean you have more time to work on the more unique parts of this project while in class.

You can also stitch your strips long-sides together into a single unit before class.  Contact Emily or any of the ladies at Neals if you need guidance on how to assemble the strips.  The dimensions you will need for the stitched-together strips will be given below, along with the yardage of fabric that is needed to create a block of the needed size.

22.25” x35” – long table runner

Strips will be assembled into a unit of at least 18” x 42”(or width of fabric)

A total of at least ¾ yard of fabric from multiple colors.

1/3 yard of fabric for binding

2/3 yard of fabric for backing

Batting – thin crib-sized quilt batting or a leftover piece at least 24” x 36”.  It's best to have your batting and backing be a few inches too big rather than sized exactly!

30” diameter – round table runner

Strips to be assembled into a unit of at least 24” x 42”(or width of fabric)

A total of at least 1 yard of fabric from multiple colors.

1/3 yard of fabric for binding

1 1/3 yard of fabric for backing

Batting – thin crib-sized quilt batting.  It's best to have your batting and backing be a few inches too big rather than sized exactly!

44” x 60” quilt

Strips to be assembled into a unit of at least 84” x 42” (or width of fabric)***

              1 Jelly roll (40 strips) + 2 additional 2.5” strips
              OR
A total of at least 3 yards of fabric in multiple colors

½ yard of fabric for binding

2 yards of fabric for backing

Batting – twin-sized quilt batting.  It's best to have your batting and backing be a few inches too big rather than sized exactly!

***If making a quilt, I highly recommend pre-cutting and stitching your strips into a single unit before class.  Stitching together this many long strips can take quite a bit of time, and you might not get to the other steps in the available time if you have to start by cutting and stitching them together.***

Materials for all sizes:

  • Rotary cutter
  • 24" Acrylic ruler with 60degree angle marked for rotary cutting
  • Thread that coordinates with your fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread snippers
  • Large safety pins to secure layers together for quilting
  • Seam Ripper
  • Fabric shears

Cutting mats will be provided during class, but rotary cutting done outside of class will require an appropriate size of self-healing cutting mat. A mat that is at least 22” will make things much easier for cutting strips.  Larger mats are great as they reduce the amount of re-positioning that you need to do with your fabric!

Optional Materials:

  • Walking foot for your sewing machine
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • 60-degree triangle acrylic template at least 6.5” on each side
  • Straight pins for aligning fabric when piecing (pieces are small and pinning is not necessary)
  • Clips for binding
